Capsule Shells in Superfood Supplements: Gelatin, Vegetarian and Vegan Labels

When comparing vegetarian superfood capsules, read the shell information separately from the ingredients inside. A fruit-and-vegetable formula name does not identify its capsule material, and a shell description does not establish the status of the whole finished product.

Start with the current package's ingredient information. Then check exactly what any vegetarian or vegan wording describes and whether it is supported by product-specific documentation.

Find the other ingredients

FDA distinguishes dietary ingredients from other ingredients used in a supplement. Its labeling guidance explains where the ingredient list belongs and why some products use the heading "Other Ingredients."

FDA's consumer questions and answers name gelatin among ingredients commonly declared in that list. If you avoid gelatin, look for it rather than assuming it cannot appear in a supplement with plant ingredients. If its source or suitability matters and is unclear, ask the manufacturer before choosing.

Read the complete line, not just the first familiar word. The fruit and vegetable ingredient-list guide shows how to separate the blend entries from the other-ingredients section.

Keep a shell statement at its stated scope

The current VITAMIZED fruit and vegetable capsule gallery lists "Vegetable Capsule (Cellulose)" under other ingredients on the fruit and vegetable panels.

That is the wording shown for the capsule. This article does not turn it into an independent vegan certification, a guarantee about every manufacturing input or a claim that the product is free of allergens.

For a multi-bottle set, inspect each panel. Do not assume a shell line from one product or bottle applies to every item with a similar name.

Separate the questions you need answered

Before comparing vegetarian or vegan wording, identify what matters to you:

  • The shell material named on the package.
  • The sources and suitability of the complete formula, not only the shell.
  • The exact scope of a manufacturer's statement or any certification shown.
  • Any personal allergy concerns that require a separate review.

If you are relying on a certification, verify that it applies to the exact current product. Do not infer one from packaging color, leaves or the word "vegetable." FDA recommends contacting the manufacturer when you need product information beyond what the label provides.

A shell description is not an allergy answer

A capsule-material line does not answer every question about the ingredients inside or possible cross-contact. Review all ingredient information and any relevant declarations or advisory wording. Our supplement allergen label guide explains why an absent advisory statement is not an allergen-free guarantee.

Do not rank effectiveness by the shell name

A shell name alone does not establish that a formula is more effective, absorbs better or is appropriate for a particular person. Keep serving size, ingredient amounts, cautions and your healthcare professional's advice in the comparison.

The label-first comparison checklist brings those details together. A useful conclusion is that you understand the shell statement and know what remains to be confirmed about the finished product.
